New Year Resolutions

SCF Senior Church Leader, Chris Doig, provides our New Year blog with a message about New Year resolutions.

Have you decided on some New Year’s resolutions yet? Maybe you have, and you’ve got it all worked out! I must admit that I’m not a great one for them. Maybe it’s because in the dim and distant past, which I can hardly remember, I decided on some resolutions which didn’t last more than a couple of weeks. However, if New Year’s resolutions work for you – don’t let me put you off. If you’ve determined to jog round Furzton Lake every morning before work in the coming year – don’t let me discourage you!

New year’s resolutions can be a good thing but Christianity is less about us trying to be better through our own efforts and more about us receiving God’s forgiveness and help. Most people think it’s about trying hard, but really it’s about trusting God. If you realise you don’t know much about Jesus and the Christian message, maybe your New Year’s resolution could be to find out? You could go on an Alpha course for example, or you can find out more at www.rejesus.com.

What about New Year’s resolutions if you are already a Christian? Surely it’s a good thing to say to myself: ‘I will work harder at my Christian life in 2012?’

Well, that can be good – but don’t get sidetracked into a cul-de-sac. If deep down we are thinking – ‘if I work harder at being a Christian, then Jesus will love me more’, then we’ve got off track. Incredibly, He just loves me, and that is based on His amazing grace, rather than any amount of effort I put in. Or if I think to myself: ‘if every day next year I spend X number of minutes with Him, then I will really grow’ – then that might be good, but beware of falling into a trap.

God in Christ has made incredible resources available to us as His children. He wants us to connect with and to experience those blessings and resources. But the emphasis is not to be on our effort, but on the attitude of looking to Him. Remember what Jesus said to us about abiding in the vine – keeping connected to Him, resting in Him and relying on Him, that we might know His life within us.

With that in mind, it will definitely be very helpful to say to myself – ‘I really do want to spend more time alone with Him’ – experiencing the wonder of His presence. It puts the emphasis more on what He wants to do, than what I can achieve.

Similarly with connecting with God’s people: it’s not that by going to more and more meetings I will necessarily grow, but it is in recognising that part of the key to experiencing His abundant life is to connect regularly with others of His family. Are you doing that?

So don’t put the emphasis on what you’re going to do. Instead, think about His incredible promises, and let’s put ourselves in the place where we can receive all that He wants to give us.

May we know more than ever of Christ’s life and blessing in 2012.

The adventure of Christmas

Jon Edwards contributes our Christmas blog. Jon has been a member of Shenley Christian Fellowship for more than 10 years. He used to work as a manager and consultant for an international Telecommunications company, but took early retirement after 30 years to care for his mother and write.

I love Christmas! I love the colour, the food, the magic of people showing love to one another. I even love the unpredictable weather, because, who knows, we might get a white Christmas.

Last night, I was Christmas shopping with a friend. We looked at all the possible gifts laid out to attract us; shop-keepers depend on our business at this time of year to make a profit, so who can blame them for tempting us? The hunt for the perfect presents for those we love can absorb so much of our free time and nearly all our energy. No wonder so many of us are buying on-line where we can at least avoid the problems with parking and the crowds who swirl around the shops. We want to show our love, to give joy to our friends and family so much that we can exhaust ourselves – and our credit cards.

I like wine

Our blog this month comes from Tim Gray. Tim is an experienced marketer and fundraiser working for World Vision. where his role is to support the marketing effectiveness of World Vision offices in Europe. At present he is interim CEO for World Vision Italy which gives him the opportunity to work with talented Italians and enjoy great ice cream.

Tim and his wife Diane (pictured with their three sons) have been active members of Shenley Christian Fellowship for many years.

I like wine. It’s one of my pleasures in life. We now have so much choice since the revolutionary days when Blue Nun or Liebfraumilch appeared on the shop shelves. Wine to me is one of God’s great gifts. Wine makers blend grape varieties to create something wonderful, to enjoy on its own, or to complement good food (another of God’s blessings). When we host our family and friends I like to take time choosing the best wine and meal combination for an enjoyable social occasion.

Exploring the Christian heritage of Milton Keynes

We couldn’t get anyone to provide the blog for July, so instead we’re providing some ideas for some interesting summer outings with a Christian heritage theme.

July and August are a good time to explore the fascinating Christian heritage of Milton Keynes.

OK, you might think it strange to mention “Christian” and “heritage” in the same breath as “Milton Keynes” – but over the centuries the countryside around here has been home to some amazing Christians whose example is a brilliant inspiration to us today.

Each has left their mark on the local landscape. Tracking down their stories and the places associated with them can make a fascinating summer leisure pursuit for people of all ages.

Andrew Stockbridge and his familyThis month's blogger is Andrew Stockbridge, who is the chief executive officer of a charity called Toybox.

Someone said this week:

“If you give a man a meal it will feed him for a day, if you teach him to fish he can feed himself forever. But if you give a man a computer…. you won’t see him for several weeks….”

I’m going to ‘blog’ about my month from mid May to mid June 2011.
